From what I've gathered Lincoln was probably pro the abolition of slavery as I imagine his political stance on the issue would have been stronger had he been pro slavery given the times.

I have read somewhere that on one or two occasions He made it quite clear that politically he was neither for or against slavery so long as the American states became unified. That was his main political dream.

As several of the Northern states had already abolished slavery the Northern armies were bolstered by freed black slaves as well as escaped slaves from the south.

It may have been that Lincoln saw abolition as inevitable as it had already happened in the British empire. It wasn't worth risking his union dream on whatever his personal beliefs. (Just opinions)

Politically, he wanted the states to have to abolish slavery themselves, rather than the government. Personally, he wanted to end slavery, and the expansion of slavery, immediately. But, he believed in State Rights and therefore he could not just encourage the government to force the slave states to enter the Union as free states.
