What was Marco Polo's reason for exploration?

He was 17 and went with his father to China to trade. His father had all ready been there and was trading with them. He was a Venice merchant so he took his son with him on the trip. Polo stayed 25 years before returning to Venice, Italy.

In reality, he was not an explorer but a trader, and if he got out to the Mongol Empire at all, it was only to see what he could trade there. But most historians now believe that he never ventured beyond his family's trading station at the Black Sea. There he would, however, have met tradesmen from the Far East; and in all probability it is the stories they told him that he reworked to a travels and exploration story of his own.
