McCauley followed her husband into battle as did some other women during this time. She did however take his post at his cannon, after he was wounded or collapsed at the Battle of Monmouth. This could be one of the starting points for the "Molly Pitcher" legend. Records from that time period are at best somewhat "cloudy"
