If you are referring to the time when there were only 13 colonies it was basically like what they have in Asia now women doing all the work like cooking, cleaning,and making sure the kids were safe while the dads were out hunting,doing their jobs like lumbering and building. All this was happening while the kids were at school if the family was average and wealthy and the poor would do all that with the kids.
