What was Pinocchio's duty while he was tied to the farmer's dog house?

Pinocchio had to take on the late watchdog's duty -- he had to guard the chicken coop.

He soon discovered that Melampo (the dog) had had a pact with the four Weasels, but Pinocchio refused to accept bribe and helped the farmer catch the thiefs. As a reward, he was set free.
