What was a joust?

Answer:
Jousting was a sport combat between two knights on horseback using lances and possibly other weapons. It was often part of a larger tournament that included other martial arts.
Jousting was done by charging the opponent with a lance while defending against the opponent's lance with a shield. Sometimes a knight was unseated, in which case he might have lost, depending on the rules agreed to. Sometimes the lances broke or were deflected, so the joust continued on horseback, or sometimes the joust was continued as a combat on foot. In addition to lances, axes, swords, and daggers were used.
The intent was not to kill or even to wound, but the sport was pretty deadly sometimes.
