During the so-called Dark Ages between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance, European Christianity discouraged the study of nature - what we now call science - on the grounds that the world is all false and doomed anyway and its rocks and trees are not worth understanding. Islam at that time was not devoted to annihilating all other ways of looking at things, and it is to the inquiring minds of Mediaeval Moslems that we owe the survival of much ancient science, as well as the existence of algebra ( not for nothing are our numbers called Arabic numerals), optics, astronomy and much more. Moslems taught the Crusaders, who in turn taught their fellow Europeans, to bathe and to eat fresh fruit and green vegetables, and so perhaps the notions of hygiene and nutrition are also attributable to Moslems.
Some of the important contributions that Muslims have made are:
* Algebra (for an unknown quotient)
* Arabic number system (0-9)
* The First pharmacies
* The First cough syrup
* Advances in astronomy
* Writing of calligraphy
* First postal service (pigeon delivery service)
The Arabs transmitted the Hindu numeral system, which is far superior to the Roman, to the West. For this reason, the numerals (1,2,3...) are called the "Arabic" numerals, although a more accurate accreditation would be the "Hindu-Arabic" numerals.
