Athens lost to the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta, was stripped of its empire and became a second rate power. Sparta assumed leadership of the Greek cities until replaced by Thebes. The heavy losses from the continual wars between the Greek city-states so weakened them that they became dominated by the rising power of Macedonia.
