Go out and buy a World War 2 documentary.
I remember once as a child hearing the air raid sirens all go off in wakefield, UK. Yes you could go and buy a video from world war two, you could search 'carter air raid siren' on the web... Carter being the UK air raid siren, and that will be close. It is a two tone siren that raises and falls in pitch, but they do not have the effects caused by space, there are some Doppler effects from sirens further away, and the whole effect is more mournful than you can imagine, stood in the streets very late at night with this siren wailing from our local town hall, the echos from the town and village halls in surrounding areas..... and other small groups of people stood in silence apart from the wailing of the sirens.
Modern day sirens which are similar are about 160 db and I imagine sirens used in WWII where probably even a bit louder than this. A jet engine at full power is about 120 db so as you can imagine it is pretty loud!
an air aid siren is how the people of an area (that is about to be bomb) is notifyed that they are about to be bombed.
in world war 2, in britain an air raid siren would go off when ever german bombers have been identified
These were common in England, especially London. The Luftwaffe would bomb London twice a day. Spotters would look for the German Bombers and when spooted would sound the air raid siren. The citizens would head for the bomb shelters.
Everyone headed for the nearest air raid shelter.

The air raid sirens sounded when approaching bombers were picked up on radar or were seen crossing the coast and heading for large cities. The sirens warned people to head for air raid shelters or to take cover in their own homes. When the danger was over, the sirens sounded again with a different tone to signify 'all clear'.
They were used to warn people of impending attacks of bombers. Today they are used for tonados and other disaters.
Tornado sirens are warning sirens set up in some communities that sound in the event of a tornado warning. This is an effective way of alerting people to danger if they are not tuned into a TV or radio. Many of these are recomissioned air-raid sirens from the Cold War.
The sirens used during World War 2 were generally referred to as air raid sirens. They were used to warn civilians of impending air raids and to signal the need to seek shelter in bunkers or underground spaces. The sirens served as a crucial method of alerting the population to the danger of aerial bombings.
