All weapons cause injury and death. Civil War weapons, like the weapons in all other ways, hurt people.

By the time of the Civil War, weapons had advanced enough to kill lots of people at great distances; however, most tactics were still the tactics of Napoleon and Wellington. Loss of life was tremendous.

Civil War weapons had some weaknesses. Most of the rifles used were actually rifled muskets. It took 20 to 30 seconds to prepare the gun, load, aim and fire. 20 seconds is a long time when a row up people are rushing toward your position with swords and bayonets and guns.

The way cannons were aimed was rather crude. Cannonballs that exploded on impact (percussive shot) were new and expensive and despite the appearance in movies were not used a great deal. Canister shot was frequently used; tour a Civil War battlefield and feel inside the cannon barrels. You will feel a variety of grooves and gashes caused by small shot rather than cannonballs. Canister shot tore men's bodys apart.
