The child labour in the industrial revelution was really bad because children were hired to crawl into small mine shafts that are dangerous and the ages were between 5 and up!
Just as bad as it is now! When you have individuals willing to exploit children and the less fortunate and governments willing to turn a blind eye, then you have the perfect setting for this kind of thing to continue.

Child labor before the Industrial Revolution wasn't actually abusive. Kids would go out to work on farms or even get hired out to farmers, or they would learn the family trade. Many children learned trades through apprenticeships, as well. During the Industrial Revolution, in short, families were poor and corporations were greedy so child labor took a dark, inhumane turn.
