Nero had many interests. We hear a lot about his later days as emperor where all the ancient writers seem to give him a "bad press" review. However They only gloss over his good points. Nero was cultivated and artistic. His interests were in music and poetry. He also had a great interest in scientific and technological matters. Under Nero concrete which had previously been used for only work type structures, was elevated to new uses. He sent an expedition to explore the upper reaches of the Nile, devised medicines, and was the first to use "eyeglasses" by means of a lens to improve his distance vision, as he was nearsighted. He commissioned the task of making a canal through the isthmus of Corinth and of digging an inland canal between Naples and Rome. Neither were completed at his death, but they were feasible projects. It is said that he personally planned the rebuilding of the city after the Great Fire, with wide streets and fireproof building materials. At the time of his death he was working on an improved version of the water organ.
