First century homes in Palestine were small, box-like buildings, usually built from hand-made and sun-dried day bricks or stone. Clay and limestone chips were crammed together to create a hard floor. Walls were white-washed with a lime plaster to keep them waterproof. A hole was sometimes hacked into the wall for a window. Houses had an even roof made of branches. A ladder was put there to climb up onto the roof. The living quarter doubled as a kitchen and a bedroom. People would sleep on the floor at night on a mat made of woven rushes. There weren't any decorative furniture either. They had simple items such as a stove, pottery and cooking utensils.
Tenement and apartment housing rose in popularity in cities around industry in the early nineteenth century. Renting better accommodated immigrants with little investment for owning a home.
