Before, everyone had to go buy food at a store every time they were hungry. It consumed a lot of time and energy. Now, people can just walk to the kitchen, not the grocery stores. In a sense, it was simpler. People obtained food locally - grew it themselves or bought from local farmers. Fruits and vegetables were seasonal, so people would put up whatever they could - canning, drying, pickling, preserves, jams & jellies - for later use. Root cellars provided adequate storage. Iceboxes were also used. People were more frugal with their food. If they weren't planning to preserve any food, they just butchered, harvested or bought what they could use. Uses were found for everything. People understood where their food came from and had a different respect for it than they do today.
