In the 1950's , African Americans had no rights. They were treated like garbage. They were called the N word. They used to be killed and beaten because of there skin color. African Americans use to be judged by the color of there skin and not by their personality. They were treated differently because there skin color was a few shades darker than the white people.
Actually, in the 1950s, African Americans did have many of the same rights that others had. It was the start to the Civil Rights Movement, and even though a lot of people hated them and treated them unfairly, there were others who thought the opposite. Back before Abraham Lincoln was president, that's when African Americans had no rights.
