Slaves were used to pick a lot of goods in order to mass produce goods in the Northern factories, therefore they worked hard and long. Slaves were usually separated from their family. They also had limited amount of clothing and were usually not free to practice their own customs and religions unless they had a lenient slave master, which was extremely rare. Also, if a slave was lucky to have a lenient slave master, then if they had enough money saved up, it was possible to buy their freedom; but this was also very rare.
