In 1964 at age 15, working as a metal machinist I was taking home 3 pounds 12 shillings for a forty hour working week. That's $7.20 in Dollars. The high figures shown for wages are at the top end of the scale. An adult tradesman would be earning Ten Pounds maximum for a 40 Hr. week. In 1974, working as a mechanical draftsman I was taking home $35 for a 40 hour week. Things changed dramatically after Gough Whitlam was elected, making tertiary education free, free medicare and wages spiralled. By 1977 I was taking home $335 a /week and the working hours had dropped to 35 hours as well.
