Monasticism is essentially the act of withdrawing from society, giving up worldly things, denying oneself all pleasures, possessions and contact with family and friends and devoting oneself to the worship and service of God.
At first (up to about the 7th century AD) this meant living isolated and alone as a hermit; the earliest hermits lived in desert areas such as the Sinai, using caves for shelter, counting their repeated prayers by means of small pebbles and living on food donated by local people. Since the Greek word for alone is monos, these hermits became known as monachoi (those who live alone). This word was later Latinised as monachi, monks.
Many early hermits were killed by desert bandits or wild animals, so gradually they formed groups of hermits - living alone, but together for safety. In time they built themselves churches and places to live in a community, shut away from the outside world. These became known as monasteries.
The period of time from 500 AD to 1500 AD is called the Middle Ages.
