Shooting stars are blocks of ice and dust, also known as comets. When these near a star such as our sun, they begin to melt and pieces break off the object. This creates an object known as a shooting star.

There was a big explosion in the solar system and it had dust and ice so it was pulled by gravity and i made the sun and the left overs were made into planets and the little ones formed into moons for the planets.

The stars are made up of plasma, which is somewhat similar to gas. As to the elements, the main element in most stars is hydrogen, followed by helium. The percentage of heavier elements is less than 1-2% in most stars.
