What was the Great Society under Lyndon Johnson? |
It was an ambitious social program that would further American promise to the poor and needy that was begun under the New Deal programs. It also aimed to eliminate racial injustice in America. Among several provisions include Medicare and Medicaid, which was to help poor people and elderly afford health insurance. Also more funds were provided for education and cities to improve the infrastructure of America. Many laws were enacted to aid the American people.
Many of these laws created a divisive nation. While aid was given to areas of the nation that needed federal support, it did not end poverty in cities and injustice. Furthermore, the Vietnam war sapped desperately needed funds that could have gone to the Great society.
Since its enactment, it created an oversize bureaucracy that imposed many regulations and also created the welfare state that has been divisive in America.
