The Mohawks were farmers and hunters. As with all tribes they lived off whatever their environment provided them. The Mohawks raised corn, squash and beans. They hunted bear, small game, deer and whatever other animals might be in the area. They also ate fish.
Corn made food, meats such as fish & deer, beans, squash, strawberries and many other vegetables and fruit. They also used maple sap to make many sweets and drinks (medicinal). They used these ingredients to make many fresh dishes as well as dried many of these foods for preservation.
There are many native tribes in the U. but, the one you will learn about when reading this is, the Mohawk Indians. You're probably wondering where this tribe is exactly from and of course if you knew, they are from the Eastern Woodlands. f you have never heard of the Eastern Woodlands than you might think how they survive well what they hunt for food are: fish, buffalo, and dears and they grew crops which were: corn, beans, squash, artichokes, pumpkin, sunflower, tobacco and various Ned bal plants. But what you didn't know was that men hunted, traded, and even did war, while the woman farmed, cared for their belongings and took good care of their family. The children didn't do much except for playing with their friends, help at home, school work and they hunt and fish with their dad. They ate rabbits and deer, etc
Now your probably wondering where they live, but don't worry ill tell you. They use to live in Adirondack Mountains, but now they live in settlements throughout New York and South Eastern Canada, and, yes, their still alive. Their homes were wooden long houses, 100ft, long made of bent wooden poles, covered with bark on animal skin and sheets of Elm bark. For many families their houses can fit up to 60 people. Ill tell you some interesting facts like how in 1650, there were 5,000 people living in the tribe but, 10 years later their were only 2,500 people living there. The people got killed by war and diseases. So the population kept dropping. Through out the year the Mohawk tribes were forced out of their territories and moved on to a new territory in other parts of what is now New York and they spread right into Canada. There are many Mohawk reservation and people that still live throughout the northeast of the United States.
Through the year at spawning season most of the natives (except the young, sick, old people) left the village and broke up into smaller fishing camps (maybe 100-200) people. Fishing consistent primarily of netting the fish. Besides the actual work of fishing, thousands of fish had to be cleaned, and then smoked. Small groups of people would leave the fishing camps with baskets of smoked fish. So now you know what they eat what they do to eat and what they do on every single day. What else should I tell you there's so many interesting facts I don't even know where to start. I think I should tell you where they got their name and what people known them for. The Mohawk Nation, then known as Kanien'kehake (people of the flint) was one of the five founding Nations of the Iroquois League. The name Mohawk was given to the tribe by the Algonquin and was later founded by the Europeans who had couldn't pronounce Kanien'kehake. One of the men in the Mohawk tribe wanted world peace. He asked every single man from each tribe to join him and make a confederacy some answered yes. Now there are five tribes there names are Cayuga, the Seneca, the Oneida, and the Onondaga. The sixth nation joined them and their name is the Tuscarora tribe.
