In the early hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn (in Greenwich Village, New York) and the patrons fought back. It was raided just because it was a gay bar and that was common practice at the time. This is usually accepted as the beginning of the Gay Liberation Movement which, like all civil liberty movements, started when people decided they had had enough of being mistreated and did something about it.
