For the US Army: a recruit made $90.00 a month. An E-4 (Corporal/Specialist 4) made approximately $350 or so in Vietnam. But keep in mind, during those times, EVERYTHING WAS ISSUED (Free). Medical, food, clothing (uniforms), cigarettes (in a combat zone/also issued with every "C" Ration meal). After a battle in Vietnam, GI's were often rewarded with free beer (always by the case). 21st Century service people might be getting $1,000 or $2,000 month...however (exceptions might be combat zones) they also have to purchase what "used to be free" for past generations. But to off-set that, the military also supplies current service members with allowances (extra money in addition to their base pay).
It was not much, a private made about $60 a month. A PFC got about $80 a month.
I joined the army in december 1961 and basic pay for a private was $78.00 before taxes (a month).
40 dollars per month

The Roman army had the coarser grade of wool for their tunics because they were cheaper to purchase. If a man chose, he could get a better grade, but would have to pay a higher price for it. Remember that the Roman soldier had to pay for his clothing even though the army supplied it.The Roman army had the coarser grade of wool for their tunics because they were cheaper to purchase.
