Answer The Russian aircraft designer Igor Sikorski built the large bomber airplane called Ilya Murometz that could carry a 1,000-lb bomb.

According to the RAF website, the largest bomb dropped in WW1 was "14 Oct 1918- The largest bomb of the war, 1650lbs, is dropped by a Handley Page 0/400 aircraft of the Independent Air Force."

The Independent Air Force was a part of the RAF set up in mid 1918 and disbanded in late 1918 or early 1919.

Apart from the 2 atomic bombs, the biggest bomb dropped from an aircraft was the "Grand Slam" a 22,000 lb weapon which could only be carried by a modified Lancaster Bomber. It was designed by Barnes Wallis who also invented the bouncing bomb used to destroy the Ruhr dams in 1943.
