Sharks are caught in a number of ways. Some are caught on rod and reel, some are caught in nets and some by picking them out of the water.

The whale shark, the largest of the sharks (and the largest of the living fishes), is a gentle monster that is a wonderful swimming companion. They eat tiny marine organisms that they strain from the water in the manner of the (non-toothed) great whales, and they don't strike any fishing lures. One was caught that measured some 12.6 meters (about 41 feet, 4 inches) in length. But what fun is it to catch a fish you can swim along side and photograph, touch with your hands, or that will even let you grab a dorsal fin and get pulled off for a while?

There were reports of a great white shark of about 23 feet being caught in the Mediterranean, but the verified record for this big critter is about 21 feet.

In the fossil record, we have megalodon. This beast was so big, it hunted full-grown whales. A person could stand in its open mouth, and it was over 50 to over 70 feet long (but we don't know because we have teeth and a bit of penis, but no full skeletons). You don't want to be in the water with this thing. No way.

As regards rod and reel, different records exist. Was the fish caught on a fly rod or "regular" salt water tackle? Was the fish caught from a boat or from land (including a jetty, dock, or land-attached breakwater? You can see that it gets difficult to classify some of the "world records" by just reading this.

The biggest great white ever caught was a female of 6.4 meters, which was caught in Cuba in 1945. It weighed 3312 kilos and it's girth reached 4.5 meters.

There have been larger ones, however. The late Jacques Cousteau saw one near Bermuda, that was as long as one of their 25 foot team vessels.

According to Wikipedia, For several decades, many ichthyological works, as well as the Guinness Book of World Records, listed two Great White Sharks as the largest individuals caught: an 11 m (36 ft) great white captured in Southern Australian waters near Port Fairy in the 1870s, and an 11.3 m (37 ft) shark trapped in a herring weir in New Brunswick, Canada in the 1930s. While this was the commonly accepted maximum size, reports of 7.5-10-metre (25-33 ft) great white sharks were common and often deemed credible.
