This wave was also recognized by Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards as indeed the biggest. McNamara, who is a pro surfer, accomplished this feat on a beast of a wave in November, 2011, off the coast of Nazare, Portugal. He was 44 years old. The previous record was held by Mike Parson. Parson in 2008 rode a monster 77 foot wave at Cortes Bank, off the coast of Southern California.
