There is no "star of the east". Everything "rises" in the east and sets in the west. As the Earth follows its path around the Sun, once per year and spins once per day, the stars appear to rise 4 minutes earlier each day, so there is no particular star that always appears in the east, or which always rises in the east at a specific time.
English boxer, Barney Aaron, was nicknamed "The Star of the East".
Today is May 21, 2009.
The brightest thing in the eastern sky this morning was the planet Venus. Mars was also visible, with Venus, Mars and the crescent Moon making a nice tight triangle.
By tomorrow morning, the Moon will be new, and probably not visible being too close to the Sun. But Venus and Mars should both be nicely visible in the eastern sky just before dawn.
You must mean "early this morning", because on June 5, 2010, the Moon didn't rise until about 1:30 AM. The "bright object" you saw, was probably the planet Jupiter, which rose about 2:30 AM. Jupiter is generally the 4th brightest object in the sky, after the Sun, Moon and Venus.
Shortly before dawn, the Moon would have been about 60 degrees above the horizon, with Jupiter a little lower and a bit to the left.
That's the planet Jupiter. Jupiter is generally the 4th-brightest object in the sky, after the Sun, Moon, and Venus. If you have a decent telescope, you may be able to see the planet Uranus, just above and to the right of Jupiter.
Of course, if you have a decent telescope, I recommend looking at Jupiter and looking for the four Galilean moons. Uranus would be, at best, barely a dot in the sky.
"Tonight" being August 12, 2010, the bright light near the Moon was the planet Venus.
If you look above and to the left of Venus, you can see two other bright planets. The reddish one is Mars, and the white one is Saturn.
The bright object near the moon in the morning sky is the planet Venus at the moment (autumn 2012). The only significant bright star art the moment is "Regulus", but I am pretty certain yu were observing Venus, it is very noticeable at the moment.
Pretty, isn't it? Mythologically speaking, two beautiful and powerful women together in the skies! Diana, the goddess of the Moon, and Venus, the goddess of beauty itself.
Tomorrow night, the Moon will appear just above Venus in the evening sky, so tell your friends to go outside at sunset and look low in the west for a neat show!
Early in the evening, right after sunset? Almost certainly the planet Venus. Venus is at its brightest and most spectacular this month. It is the third-brightest light in the sky, aside from the occasional meteoric fireball like the one that exploded over Phoenix, AZ last week.
Today is September 29, 2010. The planet Venus is VERY bright, and is near the western horizon as the Sun sets. In a few more weeks, Venus will disappear in conjunction and will reappear in about 3 months as the Morning Star.
The planet Jupiter is almost as bright, rising in the east about sunset, and crossing the sky all night. If you saw a bright object in the west after midnight, it was certainly Jupiter.
I just read it somewhere else its Venus so they say!
