∙ 13y ago-At the beginning of 1948 Czechoslovakia was the only remaining democratic country in eastern Europe.
-Elections were due in May and it was thought the communists would do badly. Czechoslovakia had not accepted Marshall aid due to the communists in the coalition government.
-Before the elections communists take over the police and remove non-communists from the government. President Benes was forced to resign and replaced by communist Gottwald.
-For the west the crisis increased the fear of communist expansion.
