What was the date of the flight that was faster then the speed of sound? |
[Edit] |
The flight that successfully broke the Sound Barrier was flown by then Captain Charles (Chuck) Yeager of the Air Force in l947. The crqaft, now inthe Smithsonian air and space museum was a Bell XS-l later retitled X-l the first of the X-craft. craft did not take off under its ownh power, was dropped from a B-29. The first plane to take off under it"s own power and attain Mach 1 In level flight was probably the Navy"s Douglas Skyrocket in l952. obviously this is far closer to something(useful in the tactical field) The Skyrocket, aptly named also was first plane to hit Mach 2 at least in the United States. Both X-l and Skyrocket- D-558-ii were purely experimental craft and not (Issue) fighters or bombers.
