∙ 10y agoThe economy of the Byzantine Empire was predominantly agricultural. Egypt, with its large and fertile delta of the Nile was the breadbasket of the Empire. The large population of Constantinople relied on Egyptian grain supplies. There was trade with the Persia, China and northern India via the Silk Road (a network of roads which crossed Asia and has been named after the most precious commodity which was traded along the routes, Chinese silk). There was also seaborne trade with southern India which used the monsoons of the Indian ocean and crossed the Red Sea to reach Egypt. Axum (Ethiopia) also thrived on the trade along the Red Sea, which included trade with the Byzantine Empire.

∙ 9y agoConstantinople the capital of the Byzantine Empire. it was not actually the religious or economic headquarter of this empire. it also became the sole important economic centre with the loss of Egypt and Syria to the Arabs and with the later loss of Turkey to the Seljuk Turks. Prior to this, Alexandria and Antioch (in Syria) Pergamon, Ephesus and Smyrna (on the western coast of Turkey) were also important economic centres.
Constantinople became the most important religious centre as it was the imperial capital and at one point the emperors took charge of the church of the empire: the Greek/Eastern Church (which later came to be called Orthodox Church). However, prior to the loss of Egypt and Syria, the Patriarchs of Alexandria and Antioch were equally important.
The term Byzantine Empire has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part of this empire. The 'east' continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years after the fall of the 'west.' The people in question did not even know the term "Byzantine" and called it Roman Empire. In other words, it was the continuation of the Roman Empire.
Constantinople had been designated by the emperor Constantine the Great as his imperial capital. He redeveloped the city of Byzantium, renamed it after himself (Constantinople means city of Constantine) and inaugurated it in 330. The city continued to be an imperial seat after Constantine. When the eastern and western part of the Roman Empire became separate in 395, Constantinople became the capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire.
