if your looking at it from a fairly basic point of view,

20's - Horror/Western

30's - Gangster/Musical

40's - Film Noir

50's - Science Fiction movies (aliens were a metaphor for communism and all that)

60's - Spy and Psychological Horror

70's - Disaster movies (Airport, The Towering Inferno)

80's - Action Blockbusters & Buddy Comedies

90's - Horror revival & Independent releases

hope this helps

Probably one of the most significant changes in motion pictures in the 1920s was the fading out of the silent movies, and the beginning of "talkies". The first feature film originally presented as a talkie was The Jazz Singer, released in October 1927. Sound accompanying the movie was physically recorded onto the same photographic strip of film carrying the picture.
