∙ 16y agoThe first department store was the Bon Marché, established in Paris in 1838. R. H. Macy & Company, Inc. in New York, John Wanamaker in Pennsylvania, Marshall Field in Illinois, and Jordan Marsh Company in Massachusetts were among the first department stores opened in the US during the 1860's and 1870's.

∙ 14y agoSears, but it didn't start out as a store. Sears was a mail order catalog started by a fellow named "Sears" in the 1850's. He was in Chicago and was selling watches when he got the idea. The railroad was just getting finished crossing the United States and he noticed that people had a hard time getting items they needed, so he came up with the idea of the catalog. The Sears catalog had everything in it from the smallest item to a house. He made the catalog in a large size because every home in those days had one book that was always out and that was The Bible. So, he made his book a size that was large enough to have out, but with the bible sitting on top. He opened a large warehouse in Chicago and began selling. Sears was a success from the start. It was so successful other people began to copy his idea and the next catalog like his was J.C. Penney. Penney was smart, so he made the size of his book larger than Sears. This meant that when people got it they would put the Penney catalog, Sears, and the bible all together. By 1900 Sears had met a man named Roebuck Together they opened a store in Chicago for people to shop in or order from their catalog. So, it was now called Sears Roebuck and stayed that way until the 1980's. When the 1906 San Francisco earthquake happened it was Sears Roebuck who sold kit houses to people who had lost their homes in the quake. Some of those still stand today. Department stores can also be dated all the way back to the Romans. They had the first "malls" and today you can see the areas where a store stood along a road or walkway in places like Pompeii or Rome. The idea of a "store" goes back more than 2000 years.

∙ 14y agoThe first department store in the United States was Zions Cooperative Mercantile Instution (ZCMI) in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was founded in 1868 and individual stores were bought out in 1999 by Macy's, Meier & Frank, and Dillards.
