The first Star Trek pilot film was "The Cage" (with Jeffrey Hunter in 1965). The second pilot was filmed in 1966 with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. This became the first-season episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before (September 22, 1966).

The first episode aired as part of the regular series was "The Man Trap" which had been filmed as part of the first 16 episodes ordered. It was shown as a "season preview" by NBC on September 8, 1966.

"The Cage" pilot was used for the two-part episode "The Menagerie."
