The first truly "American" flag was made before we became the United States of America. This flag known as the Continental Colors or ("Grand Union" flag) was first raised on January 1, 1776 on Prospect Hill in Boston. It has 13 alternating red and white stripes with the British Union Jack (King's Colors) in the upper left corner of the flag. It began as the British Red Ensign used by the British Navy since 1674 when it in 1707 became the flag of the English American Colonies under Queen Anne of England. From 1707 it was known as the Colonial Red Ensign or Queen Anne's Colors. After years of conflict with the British Parliament over taxation and quartering of troops in private homes with no vote in the decisions being made many Colonial residents were concerned about their future. As a first step toward a national identity someone sewed six white stripes on the Colonial Red Ensign making what many call the first American flag - the Grand Union flag.

The first "Stars and Stripes" American flag was made shortly after the Continental Congressional Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. It was most likely designed by Francis Hopkinson. Who actually stitched this first flag is unknown. But, an upholsterer and seamstress named Betsy Ross of Philadelphia most likely made a number of US flags.

The first "Stars and Stripes" American Flag (the flag of the United States of America) was most likely made in Philadelphia. The Maritime Committee of the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed the flag resolution on June 14th 1777. Francis Hopkinson was most likely this first designer of this American flag first used by the US Navy to distinguish our ships from the British warships and others.

"No... It wasn't cotton, and it wasn't fuzzy wool."

It was Homespun Hemp.

Betsy Ross made the first flag of the United States of America out of the finest, strongest fiber available, hemp fabric. "It is also said that the finest laces of the olden days were always made of hemp in preference to any other fiber." -Herndon, p.154.

-U.S.A. Hemp Museum

Lets not forget, it was not just any string that connected Dr. Ben Franklin to the clouds above for his famous kite experiment, it was hemp. And he also loved wearing it.

The Declaration of Independence was drafted on Hemp paper by our founding

fathers and farmers, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

"Make the most of the hemp seed and sow it everywhere."

- General George Washinton (Our most famous Hemp Farmer)

The very first flag of the United States of America was described in a resolution by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania dates June 14th 1777. A senator from New Jersey, Francis Hopkinson lived in Bordentown, New Jersey just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia most likely designed the first flag of the US. It had 13 six-pointed stars arranged in rows of 3-2-3-2-3 and 13 alternating red and white stripes with red at the top and bottom. So, where was it "invented?" You decide: Philadelphia or Bordentown.
