1928: W3XK, the first American TV station, begins broadcasting from suburban Washington, D.C. The station was an invention of Charles Francis Jenkins, who also aired first, a television commercial, for what, I dont know but,- An interesting side note was that: As Jenkins was also the first to air a television commercial. He was fined by the government for doing so, a practice that was discontinued, unfortunately, as the medium matured. The station grew to later become a 'Network' which I believe was either ABC or CBS, (not sure) but from what I gather the very first "on air " television show other than news and commercials or commercial like performances was a show broadcasted in 1934 called, "A lot of Time", based on the American civil war.

Sources disagree on the first "program" but many were copied from successful radio shows in the 1930s and 1940s. Many experimental stations existed in the 1930s before the advent of television networks.

One of the first US broadcast programs was in 1928 with The Queen's Messenger, broadcast to an audience estimated at just 4 televisions in Schenectady, New York. The 1936 Olympic Gameswere broadcast in Berlin, and the opening of the New York World's Fair was broadcast on April 30, 1939. The first Major League Baseball game was also broadcast in 1939 from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout the 1920s, there were a number of people in many countries working to develop a device that could broadcast and receive live pictures as well as sound. By the 1930s, most of Europe, Russia, and the US had developed systems that could broadcast and receive, the programming was sporadic and varied. It is very difficult to determine what the first 'program' was based on different interpretations of the term program; very little documentation remains from the pre-war period.

W2XBS was one of ten stations in the US that was issued a commerical television license by the FCC on May 2, 1941. On July 1, 1941, it became the first TV station to begin commercial broadcasting under the new call letters WNBT. Everything before this date was considered experimental television. Since that time, WNBT has served New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, which is considered the nation's #1 market. Their call letters have changed a few times over the years, but they are now known as WNBC.

In Europe and Russia, the war years interrupted most broadcast activity and in the US, television programming was severely curtailed; most that remained was public service messages. There were any number of "TV shows" shown as part of TV shows in the 1960s and 1970s, none of which was the definitive "first one." Some early shows in the 1940s featured a charcater listening to the radio, and later watching sports on TV. Usually TV characters would be seen commenting about them, and in a few cases that actually pictured rival series on other networks.
