1847 - Joseph Fry & Son discovered a way to mix some of the cocoa butter back into the "Dutched" chocolate, and added sugar, creating a paste that could be molded. The result was the first modern chocolate bar.

∙ 9y agoBefore humans mastered fire, fruits, berries, nuts and honeycomb were great treats. Then we learned to dry fruits and combine crushed nuts with honey for sweet treats. After cooking was invented, sweets were made by cooking with fruits or honey. Around 6000 BC, Persians recorded that the ancient inhabitants of southern Asia had been boiling down sugarcane juice to make the world's first candy (it is likely that this "candy" was made for thousands of years before then, but that pre-dates recorded history for this region). As far as more contemporary sweets, ice cream recipes can be dated back about 5000 years, well before the introduction of crystallized sugar in medieval times.
