This is a difficult question to answer because before the Soviet Union occupied and absorbed the territory that makes up Tajikistan was not an independent state. The region was inhabited by different tribes who were primarily nomadic. Many centuries before the USSR the region was part of the Samanid Empire. The region has sometimes been referred to by the names of some of the ancient cities like Bokhara and Samarkaand which lay on the Silk Road.
