the weather was cold and harsh
In the 1600's, Massachusetts was really cold. Not year round like you may believe, it was much like it was today. It's actually a little bit warmer in the winter even because the Gulf Stream runs right past it, and making it even warmer in the Summer.
The geography of Plymouth, Massachusetts in the 1800s comprised rolling hills, fertile farmland, forested areas, as well as coastline. The climate had highs in the low 70s in the summer, and high 20s in the winter.
Plymouth is warm. moist, and has a temperate climate. Summers are kind of hot (80-85 degrees) winters (20-25)
North Carolina was located east and the summers are very warm, winters can be up to 20 degrees
Earth's geography changed dramatically between the beginning and the end of the Tertiary. I could give you a long winded description, but I think you would prefer maps. Under "Related Links" there will be a map for the early Tertiary (called the Paleogene), and one for the later Tertiary (Neogene). P.S. The Tertiary began 65.5 million years ago and ended 2.6 million years ago.
