Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest.

Mount Everest was the tallest mountain even before it was discovered. In the misty times before recorded history, there was a certain tribe of intrepid inventors/curious thinkers. During the migrations of various other tribes, this particular one had acquired certain individuals who thrived in the accepting environment of the free thinkers. Such an immigrant was the famous Gronk...the culinary innovator who discovered the egg, barbecue, and the coconut. A lesser known individual of this tribe was Rhonda. She was not a famous mate to any of the male innovators, but she possessed that rare quality of leadership called communication. Rhonda frequently simply walked out of the camp and disappeared for several days at a time. When she returned she always had amazing tales to relate, always in relation to geography. This was the way that the tribe learned of rivers, rocky plains, deep ravines, and mountains. While the tribe might not have understood what these words meant, they knew that Rhonda had found something that was unusual to their simple existence. On one expedition Rhonda had wandered out of camp and had followed the river upstream for several miles. The lush greenery did not especially catch her eye, but the interesting animals did. Never knowing what Gronk might think was edible, she collected several samples of different items in the water and put them in her recently invented satchel, also known as a purse. Since she was so engrossed in this enterprise, she did not notice that she had wandered very far from the tribal camp. When she surveyed her surroundings, she was surprised to see in the distance an unusual sight. There was a place that almost filled the horizon and it was straight up! Craning her neck until it almost snapped, Rhonda could see that this was not an average jungle clearing. It was very tall and looked impossible to reach the height of it. At the top of this amazing landform was a white space and there was no reason for this anomaly. Thinking that perhaps this was another opening space like the volcano, Mt. Blarg, she trudged toward the beginning of the foothills. In a reasonably short time, Rhonda figured out that (1) this thing was bigger than it looked, and (2) she would not be able to climb the thing. She had found a pocket of the white stuff and found that it was very cold. When she plunged her hand into it, she found out that her fingers went numb from the frigid temperature. Reasoning that it was a stupendous find, she stuffed some of the white stuff into her (rather smelly) bag. In a very short time, she reached an impassable wall of vertical cliff- like structures, and decided that it was time to head back to camp to tell everyone of this amazing new structure. About two days into the journey back, she turned and looked at the new geological discovery behind her. It still looked stupendous, but there was a perspective at this point where she could fit the new formation into words. Since the tribe had very few words in their vocabularies at this point, she promptly invented a new word to describe this phenomena. After several days, she sauntered back into the camp and described her discovery. A general consensus was that she was lying, so an expedition was organized to verify her description. Ogg the thinker could not contain himself and appointed himself the leader, following Rhonda to the new land feature. Wow was the word which escaped the lips of all the members of the expedition and they all returned to camp with the tale of the Wow. Thus it was that Wowtain was discovered...and also the inspiration for the classic song. Mt. Wowtain was eventually shortened into Mountain and because it was the only such structure ever discovered, it became the reference point for all height in relation to geography. The song? Ogg went to Rhonda with the request..."Ya gotta help me Rhonda, help me get it out of my head." The Beachboys got it wrong.

Bologna History:

The Lighter Side of History

(Which means some historical fact and a whole lot of bologna) Prior to the discovery of Mt. Everest Hollywood was content to their lofty ideals and film making in the sleepy and rolling hills of Hollywood Hills. Now, this was in the middle 1940's when Lassie was the most loved K9 and K2 was the most loved Mountain. Lassie was a huge star who had just had her paw cemented on the walk of fame and K2 was by far, the most revered mountain in films. Such films as Casablanca Mountain, The Maltese Mountain and The African Mountain Queen were huge hits and K2 had many Oscars placed on the mantel of his many cracks and crevices. But, K2 was getting old and smoked far too much and it was only a matter of time before the ravages of stone cancer took his life leaving a big empty hole in the sky of film making. Hollywood was in a frightful tizzy to discover the next big mountain.

K2, of course, would never really die as his films had immortalized him in the same way the dashing Mt. Shasta had been immortalized in such films as Captain Mountain Blood, The Charge of the Light Mt. Brigade and The Adventures of Mt. Robin Hood. But even so, Hollywood producers had to find someone to star in their next big picture if they were to successfully keep selling stale popcorn and watered down sodas at the movies. Well, as legend has it, Andrew Waugh, the great trigonometric survey producer was holding open casting calls for new mountains of all shapes and sizes. Many mountains stood in a line 4,562 miles, to be exact, waiting to audition for their shot at superstardom. But, Waugh, having climbed many a mountain in his day was not impressed with the many mountains that auditioned in vain for weeks on end. For Waugh, he had become so disillusioned that when the great Walter Winchell asked him what was taking so long in discovering the next great mountain, Waugh responded: "If you've seen one mountain, you've seen 'em all. In the meantime, Mt. Everest had recently moved to a sleepy little suburb of Los Angeles known as Pasadena. One day, he was reading the Sunday Times and he noticed that Snow White was playing in Hollywood so he decided to go to town and catch a movie and see the sites. When Mt. Everest got to Hollywood Blvd. the next feature wasn't playing until six o:clock. With a little more than an hour to spare, Mt Everest went to the famous Schwabs drugstore on Sunset Blvd. to get a malted milk and some french fries with blue cheese as dip. While he was sitting at the counter drinking his malt and eating his french fries, sitting next to Lassie who was lapping up her malted milk and having a hamburger without the bun. Then, out of the blue, Andrew Waugh walked into the drug store to buy himself a pack of Lucky Strikes and while he was at the register he did a double take and noticed Mt. Everest.

Without any hesitation what so ever, Waugh walked up to the shy and timid Mt. Everest and held out his hands with both his thumbs and forefingers and held them so that they formed a sort of L shape and placed them together as in an L7 and looked through the frame he had created and studied the young Mt. Everest and said: "Kid, you oughtta be in pictures!" And this his how the young unknown Mt Everest became a big star and even bigger than K2, who before Mt. Everest was the biggest star in Hollywood.

Mount Everest was the highest mountain regardless of whether it was discovered or not. Due to tectonic movements, Mount Everest was growing since the dawn of humanity some 2-4 million years ago. Before that it is possible that Everest wasn't the highest mountain, but since there aren't any records stating height of mountains, then we could technically say that Everest has always been the highest mountain regardless of whether humans or their descendants named a higher mountain.
