What was the reason of the civil war?

It was fought over the twin issues of slavery and states rights. The south developed a view of the relationship between the federal government and the states which, if it had prevailed, would have made it almost impossible for the federal government to enforce its laws. Although the southern view was an arguable interpretation of the constitution, the primary reason they developed it was to rotect the institution of slavery. As anti-slavery sentiment grew in the north, so did political support for abolishing the institution at the federal level. The south kept offering interpretations of the constitution that would have prevented the abolition of slavery. And those interpretations were not invalid. When the new Republican party came into power in the election of 1860 the southern states felt that slavery was going to be ablolished so they seceeded from the union in order to protect it. The north, both to preserve the union and to attack slavery said thast secession was constitutionally impermissable and was an act of rebellion against the legitimate government. The north acted to enforce the constitution and federal law by keeping the southern states in the union and the southern states fought to maintain their independence. Michael Montagne Marx would suggest, naturally, that part of the reason for the sudden upsurge in abolition at the time preceding the Civil War was due, not only to Uncle Tom's Cabin, but to the economic upsurge in the south due to the cotton gin.

The northern states of America became nationalists and were pushing for the majority of the power to govern the people to come from the federal government. In turn, the southern states decided to withdraw from the union and form a new country.

The Tenth Amendment states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

I wouldn't nesscarily state the South 'started' the Civil War. Many dissagreements and differen views corrupted our society. Anyways.... The Civil War began mostly because of the disagreement on slavery. The North (Union), believed that slavery was wrong and that African Americans should have rights, etc etc. But the South (I cannot remember their name...) was very dependent on slavery. They could run their plantations (which were pretty much nonexistent in the North, it wasn't really the way things were run with the Yankees, for some reason. I do not mean the Baseball team, for all of you Geniuses out there that thought so) without having to lose so much money on paying workers since they 'owned' them. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president, South Carolina was the first state to Secede from the United States of America. Hope that clears it up for you... At the beginning, it was for states rights and taxes, but as the war progressed, Lincoln wanted the war to end quickly. So he said if the North won, slavery will be abolished. He expected "colored" people to join the north and fight with them and they did.

Short version is: Some states believed that the Federal Govt laws took a back seat to State laws. The Feds disagreed. One of the issues, but not the only one, was slavery. Many will argue the the South seceded because of Slavery and others say "States Rights". The truth as usual is somewhere in the middle.

Initially the beginning of the US Civil War was caused by the attack upon Federal Forts in the Charleston Harbor of South Carolina. President Lincoln had the obligation of protecting Federal lives & property, thus initially the War began in that fashion and for that reason.

The slavery issue was addressed by Lincoln in the first Emancipation Proclamation in September of 1862.
