There was no single reason for Hitler comng to power. The main factors of his rise to power were: 1) An economic depression resulting from World War I. 2) The fear of communism. 3) Hitler's appeal to nationalism. 4) Hitler's ability to manipulate the political system. Hitler was coming to power on 31st January 1933 so he would make another war good for the Germans. He was asking the Japanese for help I think. The Japanese was trying to invade China, Germany to invade England. The war started on 9th September 1939 to be exact. War ships were active 1933 - 1945.

After the Versailles Treaty was signed, Germany was left in economic ruin. Hitler helped to form the Nazi party and with the help of his Minister of Propaganda, Josef Goebbels, they were able to convince the people of Germany that the country would rebuild and achieve wealthy status, with every German citizen benefitting from it.

Germany had a number of different moderate parties who tried to run the country between them in various coalitions. All proved to be ineffective in dealing with the post war economic problems. Hilter promised decisive action and a united country which appealed to many people, even those who did not support him. He also appeared to be an effective deterrant to the rise of Communism, so other factions were willing to work with him to use his apparent strengths to their own advantage.

Hitler first appealed to the working class and recruited enough supporters to challenge the Communists at street level.

He then focused on the Middle class who had lost out financially through the hyper inflation of the 20's.

Then he seemed to give the upper class the chance to restore their pre-war position.

By promising everything to everybody at a time when no one else appeared to have any answer at all, he presented himself as the perfect leader.

The majority of Germans were not fooled by this but enough people supported him to make him the single most popular leader, then when more moderate parties backed him, thinking that once conditions improved they could dump him, it was Hilter who took over, creating a Dictatorship.

Germany was in a pretty desperate state after WW1. They were forced by the triple entente alliance (Britain, France and Russia) to pay millions in war reparations and, as a result of this, Germany hit a terrible depression. Angered and humiliated by the fact that the powers of the triple entente had blamed them for the war, Germany looked up to the Nazi party to solve all their problems and restore glory to a country that had been near destroyed after the war.

  1. Hitler was a great speaker, with the power to make people support him.
  2. The moderate political parties would not work together, although together they had more support than the Nazis.
  3. The depression of 1929 created poverty and unemployment, which made people angry with the Weimar government. People lost confidence in the democratic system and turned towards the extremist political parties such as the Communists and Nazis during the depression.
  4. The Nazi storm troopers attacked Hitler's opponents.
  5. Goebbels' propaganda campaign was very effective and it won support for the Nazis. The Nazis targeted specific groups of society with different slogans and policies to win their support.
  6. Hitler was given power in a seedy political deal by Hindenburg and Papen who foolishly thought they could control him.
  7. German people were still angry about the Treaty of Versailles and supported Hitler because he promised to overturn it.
  8. Industrialists gave Hitler money and support.
