Most of their recordings were made for Parlophone Records, an EMI label. Capitol Records was EMI's American branch, and issued most of their records in the US. The Beatles founded their own label, Apple Records, in 1968, as a division of their company Apple Corps. EMI became Apple's distributors.

EMI staff producer George Martin, who at the time headed up Parlophone Records. Parlophone at the time was known for its original-cast recordings of popular musicals, "regional music", and recently comedy, including the cast of The Goon Show (Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, and Harry Secombe) and Peter Ustinov ("Mock Mozart").

Martin's previous ventures into Pop Music had had limited success, and the Beatles had already been turned down by most of the major labels in England. Martin scored immediate points with the Beatles, for his work with the Goon Show performers; they scored points with Martin for being willing to try different things (rockified versions of "The Sheik Of Araby" and old show tunes).

Martin's plan to replace then-drummer Pete Best with a session musician on their records (Best showed little flair, during their EMI audition) prompted the Beatles to replace Best completely, with Ringo Starr. With the right people in place, they proved a winning combination.
