I believe "Clan of the Cave Bear" takes place within the Carpathian Mountains that run from Slovakia, through Ukraine and into Romania. There has been proof of early prehistoric human clans/tribes in these beautiful mountains & their valleys. From what I have researched Ayla (the main character of the book), is blonde with blue eyes, which is the total opposite of the Cave Bear Clan tribe that takes her in, they are smaller in height, dark hair & dark eyes vs Ayla who is very tall for a female, very strong willed, lighter in skin tone with the blond hair & blue eyes. It is believed that the lineage of someone like Ayla, relocated towards the North & West to the upper lands of Europe. Some theorists believe that the lineage eventually become what we know in later years as the Celtics and/or the Vikings.
Paw prints have different meanings to a Native American (Indian) . One may be that their last name is Bear, or the clan their family is part of is the Bear clan. Some people not just "Indians" think it represents strength, power, courage. Its all about personal perception.

The cave bear is important to the Clan because he taught their ancestors to live in caves, which protect the Clan from predators and the elements. They worship the cave bear as a special ancestor. When Ayla found the cave that the Clan moved to after the earthquake, Creb found a cave bear skull, and the Clan took it as a sign that the Great Cave Bear (who they always referred to as Ursus, because calling him plain old "bear" was sacrilege) himself wanted them to live there.
