Although the Continent that we lovingly refer to as "Africa" went by various names by its' Ancient inhabitants, one of the most popular names for that Continent is "Alkebulan".

This name, ALKEBULAN was strategically changed over the years following through repetition, after the defeat of Ancient Alkebulan Military Strategist, Hannibal at the Battle of Zama, by the Roman warrior, Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus also known as Scipio Africanus, Scipio the Elder, and Africanus the Elder (236-183 BC), who was a general in the Second Punic war and statesman of the Roman Republic.

i) The ancient African civilization we call Ghana existed in West Africa between the Niger and the Senegal Rivers

ii) In 1928, archaeologists unearthed an amazing culture in the Nigerian village of Nok. We know very little about the ancient Nok culture of West Africa. We don't even know what they called themselves; we do know, however, that they uncovered the mysteries of iron.

iii) The European colonial powers called Africa "the Dark Continent" when they began their explorations. They saw it as a vast and dangerous place filled with savage people, but Africa has been home to many advanced, exotic civilizations. Many have been buried beneath the sands of time, but we know of others, and archaeologists continue to uncover more clues about ancient African civilizations.

The name "Africa" was invented and used by the Romans, but they had no idea how big the continent was. They used the name to to refer to their small area around Carthage.

In Africa itself, there are well over 1000 spoken languages, who would all have used their own names for places known to them. Africa is a very big place and no language encompasses the whole continent. It is very unlikely that any of the many empires, kingdoms and tribes had a concept of Africa as one clearly bounded continent with one name. They probably referred to their local region, and some far off regions known to them.

So the answer is that Africa has never had one original name. The Roman name spread out to encompass the whole continent.
