Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied with 73 electoral votes, John Adams 65 and Charles C. Pinckney 64 votes. After 36 ballots, Jefferson was elected president, Burr his vice president (who would later be the only vice president to be charged with murder).
In the election of 1800, the Federalists chose John Adams to run for president with Charles Pinckeny to be his vice president. The Republicans chose Thomas Jefferson to run for president and Aaron Burr to be his vice president.
However, the ballots for that election did not state which man was running for which office. When the vote came in, Jefferson and Burr beat out Adams and Pinckney. But Jefferson and Burr both received equal numbers of votes. There was no designation that Jefferson was the one who was supposed to be president.
The constitution says that in a tie, the president is selected by the House of Representatives. Each state had one vote, and the winner was the person with at least nine votes.
The states voted, but Jefferson only got eight votes. The election took about a week and more than thirty ballots. Finally, Jefferson received another vote and became the president of the united states until 1808. (he served two terms).
I hope this helps (= I just studied it in my history class!
1824 U. S. Presidential Election Results:
House of Representatives Final Vote:
Thomas Jefferson won the 1800 presidential election defeating John Quincy Adams, Aaron Burr, Charles Pinckney, and John Jay. In 1800 electors voted for two individuals and did not distinguish between their presidential and vice-presidential choices until the passage of the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1803. The recipient of the most electoral votes in 1800 would become president and the runner-up vice-president. Thomas Jefferson received 73 electoral votes, his running-mate Aaron Burr received 73 electoral votes, John Quincy Adams received 65 electoral votes, Charles Pinckney received 64 electoral votes, and John Jay received 1 electoral vote. Although John Quincy Adams ran as Thomas Jefferson's main opponent in the general election, running-mates Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr received the same number of electoral votes. The election was decided in the House of Representatives, with 10 State delegations voting for Jefferson, 4 voting for Burr and 2 making no choice. Thomas Jefferson became President and his running-mate Aaron Burr became Vice President.
Responding to the problems from the 1796 and 1800 elections, in 1803 Congress proposed the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution - prescribing electors cast separate ballots for president and vice president - to replace the system outlined in Article II, Section 1, Clause 3 of the United States Constitution. By June 1804, the states had ratified the amendment in time for the 1804 election.
1800 Electoral College Votes:
Sitting Vice-President Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams to become the third President of the United States, making John Adams the first one-term President.
By the time of the next presidential election in 1804, the Constitution had been amended changing the way the vice president is elected.

It was severely strained to be sure.
The election of 1800 was significant because another party came into power after eight years. It was the first time there was transition of power in the new nation and it was peaceful. It has been ever since.
The Twelfth Amendment was passed. It changed the way presidents are elected. It was no longer the first place votes would be President and second place would be VP.
The election of 1800 was more important than the election of 1796. In 1796 George Washington was elected president unopposed. The election of 1800 had several people vying for the presidency.
The election of 1800 proved that the executive branch could be won by an Anti-Federalist.
The election of 1800 is called the Revolution of 1800 because power changed hands without war. The Federalist Party had held powers since George Washington's first election in 1788.
