From the data estimated for total population in 1776, departing/loss of slaves during the revolution (1776-1783), the increased slave transport statistics of the 1780s, slave birth rates, and most importantly, the census of 1790, a reasonable "guesstimate" can be made. With an estimated population of 2.5M in 1776, ~380-400k were slaves (of all types to include Indian, but not including indentured servants).
