New sewing machines run the full range from as low as a few hundred dollars to as much at $2,000. It all depends on what features you want on your machine. It is possible to find refurbished sewing machines for as little as $25.00 at repair shops. You can find refurbished machines in the better makes there as well, for much lower price than new.

Sewing machines can also be purchased from charity thrift stores, but you may find that they don't work properly, so buyer beware.

The sewing machine was a brand new concept in 1846, since the design was only just patented in that year. The cost for a new sewing machine in 1846 was around 300 dollars, which in today's money would be like spending almost 10,000 dollars.

This depends on how advanced you are and how much sewing you plan on doing. For a beginning to intermediate seamstress, $100 (in the US) will usually get you a pretty nice sewing machine that will last for several years if you maintain it correctly. Occassionally you can find sales to get the same machines for $70 - $80. For more advanced seamstresses or those who sew commercially (and therefore use their machine very often) will spend about $500 or more. If you'd like a specialty machine, such as an embroidery, quilting, or serging machine, the cost is much higher. These specialty machines are really only practical to those who sew commercially.
