The Book of Isaiah is probably the most misunderstood book in The Bible. There are several perspectives to the prophetic nature of this book.

The Book of Isaiah is signed in verse 1:1 by Isaiah, son of Amoz, who lived during the reigns of the Judahite kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, in the late monarchial period. However, around half of the book was written more than a hundred years later, during the Babylonian Exile, by an anonymous author now known as Second Isaiah. This gives the book the air of prophecy, as the author strangely discusses events that First Isaiah could not have known about in the earlier period.

A second issue comes from mistranslation of the Hebrew scriptures, but particularly of Isaiah 7:14. The Septuagint, an early translation of the Hebrew Bible into the Greek language, incorrectly translated this passage to say that a virgin would conceive and bear a child. The correct translation would have been "the young woman", and the young woman in question did have a child a few verses later in Isaiah. Taking a single verse out of context, the author of the Gospel of Matthew relied on this mistranslation to show that it was prophesied that Jesus would be born of a virgin.

A focus of dispute between Jews and Christians lies in a series of verses known as the Servant Songs (Isaiah 42:1-4, 49:1-6,50:4-11, 52:13-53:12). In these passages, God is said to promise to choose a servant who will teach his true way to the nations. In some verses, the servant appears to be a person, in others a group, in some a real figure and in others imaginary. The only time the 'servant' is named, the reference is to Israel. It is even possible that Second Isaiah is, in places, putting himself up as the servant. However, Christians have seen the Servant Songs as prophecies of Jesus.

So, there are many ways to find prophecies in the Book of Isaiah if you really want to look for them. Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) says that the first study of a text may not seem to support a traditional Christian conviction, or the answer one hopes to find in the Bible, but with a little ingenuity the comparison can be set up again with other emphases and make the answer come out right.

The kings with whom he associated are those of the last half of the eighth century, and the setting of his work is this period. He was concerned with Assyria as the dominant power. Chapters 40-55 were added much later and were written by an anonymous author now known as Second Isaiah.
