The Stamp Act Congress convened in New York in October 1765. The colonists were able to persuade Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act, but on that same day, Parliament also passed the Declaratory Act. This act proclaimed Parliament's ability "to bind the colonies in all cases whatsoever." The message was clear: Under no circumstances could Parliament abandon in principle its right to legislate for the 13 colonies. This right included taxation.
This act allowed Britian to govern and bind the colonies whenever and for what ever they wanted, without any repercussions. When this was passed the colonialists became more angry and resistent toward England.
The Declaratory Act of 1766 accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act. It asserted complete authority to make binding laws of the American Colonists "in all cases whatsoever." It was copied almost word for word from the Irish Declaratory Act, which placed Ireland in bondage to the crown. While many colonists celebrated the repeal of the Stamp Act, others perceived dangers in this new law. It was not repealed until 1864, even though Britain recognized independence of the colonies in 1783.
The Declaratory Act of 1766 was one of the British Parliamentry Acts . Its purpose was so that the British could outlaw all the American Colonists from making their own laws. They British did not want the American colonists to form a government within the colonies, so to pevent this they passed the Declaratory Act of 1766.
To show that England could make laws for the colonies
The purpose of the British Declatory Act of 1766 was to reiterate England's authority to tax the colonies. They repealed the Stamp Act at the same time.
In 1765, England had passed the hated Stamp Act. They repealed it just a year later, but passed the Declaratory Act stating that they still had complete authority to tax the colonies.
The British Declaratory Act went hand in hand with the Stamp Act. It stated that the taxing authority worked the same way in England as it did in America. The act passed in 1766.
