In this method oil droplets in the form of mist was produced by an atomiser and they were allowed to enter through a tiny hole in the upper plate of electrical condenser.The downward motion of these droplets was viewed through a telescope wid micrometer eye peice. By measuring the rate of fall of these droplets, Millikan was able to measure the mass of oil droplets. Also the air inside the chamber was ionized by passing Xray beams thru it.The electrical charge on these droplets was acquired by collision with gaseous ions...For more information...check in Yahoo answers

Robert Andrews Millikan was able to generate a stream of oil drops with a known and uniform mass. The drops were electrically charged and then allowed to to enter through a tiny hole in the upper plate of an electrical capacitor. The voltage across the capacitor plates was altered to control the rate of the fall of the oil drop against the force of gravity. By measuring the rate of the fall of droplets and the voltage applied Millikan was able to find the charge of the electron.

The Millikan Oil Drop Experiment was performed by Robert Millikan in 1909. This experiment determined the size of the charge on an electron. He also figured out there was a smallest 'unit' charge, or that charge is 'quantized'. He received his Nobel Prize for his work.

The experiment demonstrated that electric charge is 'quantized'. That means

that there is such a thing as the smallest possible piece of charge. All of the

pieces are the same size, and no matter how big or small an amount of charge

you have, it's always a pile of those little tiny pieces. That means that a charge

can't actually be any amount you want. It has to be a whole number of those

little pieces. You can have 1 trillion and 6 of them, and you can have 1 trillion

and 7 of them, but it's not possible to have a charge of 1 trillion and 61/2 of

them.

The size of one piece of charge is called the 'quantum' of charge. It's the amount

of charge on one electron or one proton. No charge lessthan that much exists.

Millikan discovered the charge of an electron because of the oil drop experiment. Also, he used John Dalton's charge to mass ratio of the electron to determine the mass of the electron. The discovery of the mass was a result after the oil drop experiment. The only data directly derived from the experiment was the charge of the electron.
